Learn about the new statewide housing law and the impacts on local ADU development.

Overview

Length: 2 Hours

Join us for this special edition 2-hour webinar providing an overview of Massachusetts' new ADU laws which went into effect on February 2, 2025.

The Affordable Homes Act was passed into law in 2024, thereby requiring cities in Massachusetts to update their Accessory Dwelling Unit codes to allow ADUs by-right including detached ADUs up to 900 square feet, drop owner occupancy, and eliminate off-street parking requirements. The law will supersede all existing municipal standards.

This webinar will provide an overview of the state law by Kol Peterson, ADU subject matter expert, and Chris Lee, ADU developer. The presenters will cover this law in regard to opportunities and barriers to ADU development.

The intended audience for this session are ADU practitioners (designers, builders, lenders, appraisers, real estate professionals, entrepreneurs) and municipal planning staff that are seeking to understand how this law will work statewide.

Gain insights on this legislative topic and the opportunity to consider how these zoning changes impact development entitlements. There will be an opportunity to ask questions about these new regulations.

Guest Presenter: Chris Lee

Chris started developing multi-family homes six years ago and had never strayed from his philosophy, "if my wife and I won't live in it, no one should". In other words, he is passionate about creating high-quality housing that tenants can call home. He created Backyard ADUs after realizing the best opportunities in real estate were in a homeowner's backyard. Leveraging experience in development projects, working with municipalities, and real estate finance, Chris set up Backyard ADUs to help homeowners benefit from a tight rental market and help solve the housing crisis.
